Bhaja Govindam , sometimes known as Mohamudgara, is a popular Vedantic poem. The text is a composite work of 20 verses. Twelve of these verses are attributed to Adi Shankara. The remaining verses built on the cornerstone thoughts of the 12, are by his disciples. The work is said to have been inspired while Adi Shankara lived in the Holy City of Kaashi. Here he observed how scholars who were well versed in many systems of knowledge lacked Knowledge of the Self. Accomplished even as they were in their fields they were mired in passions and repulsions. The text shows a mirror to human frailties and provides a safe passage through life with the advice contained within. Primarily aimed at those who wish to take to a monk’s life there are many verses that are useful for others. The text aids in understanding life’s real purpose from the Vedantic viewpoint and thus improve the quality of living the life- divine.
