Translation of the Tiruppavai
Oh beautiful girls, who wish to go, let us plunge in the waters.
For these are the auspicious days of the Margashira month, when the moonlight gladdens our hearts.
Most affectionate prosperous young girls, of the Gokul clan,
He who is proficient in handling the most terrible enemies, the son of Nandagopa,
He who is a young lion to the watchful eyes of Yasoda,
Whose form is as dark as the rain clouds, whose face bears eyes, red like the sun,
That Narayana himself will shower grace on us,
When we openly demonstrate our subservience to his feet and praise him,
Oh my dear pavai.
Reflections
There is an abundance of spiritual wealth in our Bharatiya scriptures. Scriptures are like the milch cows, ready for milking by cowherds, who are seekers of devotion. The cowherdesses in Andaal’s songs are steeped in the comforts of life, like many of us today.
Krishna, the son of Nandagopa - protector of the Divine Revelry, and of Yasoda - provider of Divine Glory, has his right hand raised like a spear. This is the spear of Knowledge with which we too can destroy our enemies. We seek from this young lion, vigor to strengthen our efforts in sadhana. We look up to his form - the Dark Cloud that holds the rain of immense potentialities. His eyes light up our mundane life, his face beams moonlit rays of nourishment.
This is the season of Divine-Plenty. Narayana’s grace is available for those who gather in groups and sing His praise. We begin at Stage One - the level of humility, where the Finite in us bends to the Infinite all around us.
