Translation of the Tiruppavai

Dear mother, you have observed all vows that pave your way to heaven.
Why do you not at least reply my calls and open the door for me?
Narayana whose hair is fragrant with the tulasi,Whom we praise, will certainly bless us.
Kumbhakarna who fell to the jaws of Yama a long time ago,Seems to have suffered defeat at your hands.
Did he give his sleep to you?
Oh best of girls, you seem to possess unlimited sloth.
Clear your head and come, open the door, oh my pavai.

Reflections

Message to the Sadhaka who has to her credit, many good qualities but is possessed by laziness.

One can have all the accomplishments in the eyes of the world but if we have not taken even one step towards the divine then all else is truly valueless. There is lethargy towards the life of the Spirit when one experiences back to back successes in daily life. Often such a person will doubt the value of engaging in this devotional immersion, as the rewards are not immediately visible. We are reminded that with the body-mind equipment we currently have, time is limited. This precious time is to be used only for ‘vyashema deva hitam yad ayuh’. Successes should not get to one’s head. It is Naaraayanan who will certainly pour rewards in the form of blessings that are trikaala ateeta. His presence is evident in the simple subtle fragrance of a plant like theTulasi,
