Translation of the Tiruppavai
Dear sister of the prosperous cowherd,
The bellowing dark young buffaloes agonize for their calves.
Their udders flow with milk even as they stand (unmilked)
Streams of milk splash on the floor, soiling the stalls.
Here we are, waiting outside, holding the portals of your doorway.
Our heads are getting wet with the morning dew.
Why do you not at least open your mouth ?
And sing the glories that gladden the mind,
Of the one who furiously destroyed the lord of Lanka ?
It is time for you to get up.
What kind of deep sleep is this ?
What will other inmates of your household think of you ?
My dear pavai.
Reflections
Message to the Sadhaka about the timeliness of this worship.
Observances like this paavai vratam can be done only once a year. At this time the spiritual harvest will be plentiful. It cannot therefore be postponed. Companions in the spiritual path have braved many difficulties to reach out to those who are asleep to the divine. This is the perfect time to wake up and sing the glories of Raama, the beautiful, who destroyed the perverted ruler of the land of the auspicious. There is no time like now

SHUBHAM
