Translation of the Tiruppavai

Let us sing the glories of the one who tore open the beak of the bird,
Who plucked the heads of the cruel rakshasa (Ravan).
The girls have arrived at the site where the pavai rites culminate.
Venus has arisen and Jupiter has set.
Oh beautiful one with eyes like the black bee in the lotus,
Listen to the cry of the pullu birds.
Instead of plunging into the waters and trembling thus with joy,
Have you put asleep the pavai rites on these auspicious days ?
Abandon your sleep and deceit.
Mingle instead with us, oh my dear pavai.

Reflections

Message to the Sadhaka to refrain from deceit and instead, move on to the Path–Divine.

The luminaries and the birds proclaim the importance of timely worship. Many of those who have agreed in the collective worship are waiting for others to come. At least out of sympathy the sadhak should refrain from sleep. Diving into the trembling waters of Bhakti, one should give up falsehood and yield to one’s real nature. Then one can mingle with all who have arrived at the sacred grounds. Here preparations have been underway for the arrival of the Lord of Blessings
