Translation of the Tiruppavai
Oh one who guards the doors of the temple of the leader Nandagopa,
Who guards the entry that is decorated with banners,
Please open the gem studded doors.
A long time ago, that mysterious jewel of a Lord,
Promised us, the gopis, the parai drum.
So here we have arrived with pure minds,
To sing the wake-up song.
Do not try to dissuade us again and again, Ammaa.
Please draw the door to reality, oh my dear pavai.
Reflections
We have come to the level where body consciousness has dropped off. We are standing therefore outside the portals of our heart-temple. There are no special qualifications necessary to approach the Lord. The adhikaratvam or the rights of the seekers lie in the intense desire to seek. This process of milking is akin to the work of the gopis who shared the same clan as Shri Krishna. The body of the seeker has been prepared ready with the austerities, yet the journey inwards cannot be taken without the permission of the doorkeepers of the temple. What is the clearance permit here? It is the promise given by the lord to his devotees during his incarnation as Krishna, that he will certainly bless the gopis. He will give them the authority to “drum his presence”. All that is asked of, is the permission to wake up the “Sleeping Lord” collectively.
The doorkeepers are part of the reality of the connection between the pindanda and brahmanda. The manikathavam is the collection of mantras that are like wish fulfilling gems that will open doors to many an esoteric knowledge.
