Translation of the Tiruppavai
While the stationary lamps burn,
Nappinai sleeps on the soft mattress that spreads over an ivorylegged cot.
Her hair is adorned with flowers.
There you too adorned with flowers,
Are fast asleep with your head on her breast.
Please open your mouth and speak.
Dear Nappinai, whose eyes are smeared with collyrium,
You have slept too long with your husband.
Will you not be separated even for a moment?
This is not fair, at all, my dear pavai.
Reflections
We are requesting Prakriti to release her hold on the Lord with whom she is intimately entwined. This release is requested within the continuity of our personal life, that is represented by the ever-burning lamp. This entwinement is supported by the panchamahaabhutas, the cosmic principles out of which creation is fashioned. The difficulty that a devotee experiences, due the shackles of creation, is expressed in the accusation of “unfairness found in the world.” Here is a deep desire for the much needed affirmations from the Divine. An experience of a state beyond the limitations of the panchamahaabhutas is warranted.
