Translation of the Tiruppavai

Ye who live in the mortal world, listen to the paavai rites observed by us.
We sing praises to the holy feet of the lord, who rests on the milky ocean.
We shall refrain from consuming ghee and milk, rising early to bathe in the waters.
No collyrium shall we apply to our eyes, no flowers will beautify our hair.
Forbidden acts will not be committed by us and as a group we shall not engage in gossip.
We shall give alms and charity to the needy, the poor and the pious souls.
Assured of entry to heaven, delighted we will feel, Oh my dear pavai.

Reflections

While living in this world of bhoga, during these thirty days, a guideline for rehabilitation is indicated in this song.

  • Praise shall be offered to the feet of the Lord who is in meditative sleep. Our place is in the vicinity of his divine feet.
  • We shall move away from the luxuries of daily life by giving up enriched foods and drinks and allow our bodies to experience the early morning dip in the cold waters of ushas sadhanas.
  • We shall no longer dress to please the world. Attires will be simple. Cosmetics are no longer needed. Fancy coiffures and decorations do not beautify our hair. Our shringaar is the bhakti of the lord, and nothing else.
  • We shall become vigilant to the minutest flaws in our behaviour. We shall shun unethical and immoral acts.
  • We shall not expose ourselves to any advice that is contrary to the spirit of this vratam.
  • We shall give alms and charity to the deserving and the needy according to our capacity.
  • These then, are the deeds towards gaining salvation.
