Translation of the Tiruppavai

The brave lion sleeps in the cave during the rains,
Becoming aware he opens his fiery eyes.
His bristles stand erect as he rises.
Shaking and bending to his sides,
He stretches his body.
A mighty roar rises from him as he comes out of the cave.
Oh blue lotus Lord!
Get up from your lion throne, housed in your temple.
Come out and bless us.
Inquire of us the reason as to why we are here.
Understanding our plight bless us, oh my dear pavai.

Reflections

The most important juncture has arrived. The Lord wakes up like a lion in a cave. The devotee has passed all tests, earned his trust and evolved to where demands can be made. This is the ultimate stage of purification. The roar of the divine is strong and fearsome yet the intensity of the devotion alone makes it possible for the humble devotee to remain unalarmed. The sadhaks ask the lord to come down to the level of the devotee and answer their queries and bless them all. His involvement in our grievances is the demand.
