Translation of the Tiruppavai

We come early in the morning,
To offer worship to your golden feet.
Do you ask us the meaning of this worship ?
Listen! You took birth in a clan whose livelihood is grazing cattle.
Do you think you can ignore our pleas or our offerings?
We are not here for getting blessings, just for this day !
Govinda, we need it for eternity.
Through all our births, seven and seven
We wish to be bonded to you.
We wish to serve only you.
Therefore remove all our other desires, my dear pavai.

Reflections

A conviction that the Lord will not abandon suffuses the entire being of the sadhak. A bold statement is made here when the devotee says “Do not assume that this request is bound by time and space!” Whether we devolve into the seven talaas below or evolve into the seven lokaas above, all we wish for is a permanent relationship with the Lord. We shall be subservient only to the hidden Divine in us, and naught else. It is imperative therefore that He must remove all other useless desires from the heart of the devotee!
