Translation of the Tiruppavai
The beautiful moon faced cowherd girls beg for refuge,
To Madhavan, Kesavan that churned the ocean of milk.
They beg to get the material for this vratam.
In this story of Srivilliputtur,
Where the one who wears the cool lotus garland comes from,
This Kodai, daughter of Bhattar,
Composed this garland in Sangam Tamizh.
These thirty songs must be sung diligently.
Whoever sings the verses, twice
For them Shrivishnu, with mountain like shoulders,
With passionate red eyes adorning his beautiful face,Will bless .
Wherever they may be,
They will attain happiness, my dear pavai.
Reflections
These 30 songs have been fashioned by none other than Kodai, the daughter of Alvar Shri Vishnuchittar of Srivilliputtur. The songs have been addressed to none other than the enchanting form of Vishnu, on behalf of the cowherd girls, so that they may be able to gather all the prerequisites for the fulfillment of this vratam. These prerequisites are both physical and mental.
If these 30 songs are sung, repeating each line twice, then the singer can be assured that no matter where she is, she will always be the beneficiary of Divine love and joy.
