Translation of the Tiruppavai
To the child born mysteriously, as desired by the people of Mathura, of the North,
To the one who reigned by the great holy waters of the Yamuna,
To the one who shone like the auspicious lamp that highlighted the cowherd clan of Gokul,
To that Damodara that imparted wisdom, while still in his mother’s womb,
To him we come with pure minds, to offer flowers and songs of praise, all the while keeping him in our minds.
He will certainly absolve us from sins committed in the past.
The ill effects of future acts will be mere ashes in the fire.
Repeat this, oh my dear pavai.
Reflections
History has given us the pouranic truth of ShriKrishna. This great enticer performed his antics by the Yamuna (the flow towards Yama), death divine. We too are traveling towards the dissolution of this body-mind-equipment. We are caught in the enticing reign of maayaa.
We shall seek refuge from the great enticer. To him, we come with a mind purified by these observances. Our renewed efforts are the flowers we bring for offering. The words that issue from us will be restricted solely to the divine thoughts. Certainly then, our demerits will be absolved and burnt to ashes in the fire of devotion.
All sadhaks must convince each other of this truth.
