Translation of the Tiruppavai

Listen to the chirping of the pullu birds,
Do you hear, dear girl, the loud sound of the conch that announces the break of day?
It is coming from the temple where Garuda, the king of birds reigns.
Child, wake up!
He sucked the poison from the breast of the rakshasi.
He kicked sly Sakata’s cart, reducing it to splinters.
That Seed that is dormant on the watery substratum, is what is captured, within the minds of yogis and munis.
Oh child, sake up slowly to the sound of Ari.
Repeat again and again as joy penetrates your heart, my dear pavai.

Reflections

Message to the Sadhaka who says, “ I don’t know how to wake up to the Divine.”

Wake up to your Inner Self, the first thing in the morning! The birds proclaim early morning, the value of waking up from our stupor. If this transition is hard, then we are told that the first thing to do is to sound the name of ‘Ari’. Repeat internally the name of the Lord again and again till it reverberates deep into our hearts. He alone can withdraw our accumulated poisons. He alone can shatter the hardened routines of a misdirected life. He is the source of this grand creation that we must contemplate upon.
