Translation of the Tiruppavai

Oh rakshasi of a girl! Do you not hear the screeches of the aanai chaathan birds mingling with the sounds of the morning?
Do you not hear the jingling of the coin and bead necklaces of the gopis,
Who with their fragrant hair churn buttermilk with weary hands?
Daughter of the Zamindar ! Have you obtained special permission from Narayana to put to sleep his praises ?
Get up briskly and come open the door, oh my dear pavai.

Reflections

Message to the Sadhaka who says, “ I have everything I need, so why should I pray?”

One is dead like a ghost if one is not awake to the divine. The fact that we have been blessed with a comfortable life, with all the necessary amenities does not mean, that we have been given the authority and freedom to refrain from considering the divine source of all this comfort.
Becoming alert to this truth, those of us who have a comfortable life should resort with alertness and open our minds joyfully to the sounds of the divine being proclaimed by nature all around us. We should move away from luxury to frugality.
